The Humanitarian Academy at Harvard is pleased to host the Joint Humanitarian Operations Course from January 21-22, 2016.

As the US Government (USG) lead for international disaster response, USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) created the JHOC in 2004 at the request of the Department of Defense (DOD).  The JHOC was established for select US military leaders and planners to discuss the relationship between USAID/OFDA and its partners.

The JHOC audiences includes DOD civilians, offices and NCO’s in operations, logistics, communications, medical, planning and civil affairs.  Additionally, HA/DR practitioners and researchers from the NGO and academic communities are welcome.

The two day training utilizes interactive presentations, participant discussion groups and case study methodology.

*JHOC is joint certified by the DoD Joint Staff for .5 Joint Qualified Officer points.

Training Objectives

  • Become familiar with USG international disaster response structures, relevant offices, policies, mandates, and roles and responsibilities.
  • Identify areas of mutual coordination and cooperation between USG civilian agencies and the US military, including best practices and lessons learned.
  • Become familiar with the international disaster response system, including the role of the host nation, international and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s), and UN agencies.  Understand their unique roles and responsibilities as they relate to US civilian and military entities.
